The Captain James Cook Memorial is comprised of the water jet in the lake and the nearby terrestrial globe. This commemorates the bicentenary of Captain Cook's landing on the east coast of Australia in 1770. The bronze globe uses meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude to form an open-cage globe with land masses depicted in copper. Lines on the globe illustrate Captain Cook's voyages. The jet is a stunning example of hydraulic engineering sending three tonnes of water into the air at 260 kph. The jet operates between 2pm and 4pm daily, unless conditions prevent operation.
